Chapter 18

Oscar-winning Actor Supervisor Shen

The piercing alarm blared through the building. In the surveillance room, the on-duty officers shot to their feet. “What—what is that?!”

The monitor displayed the situation in the elevator: Noda Shunsuke was holding a knife to Shen Zhuo’s throat from behind and even smiled at the camera, a smile so chilling it made one’s blood run cold.

An officer quickly picked up the phone. “Level-one alert, elevator number 3 on the tenth floor! The Supervisor has been taken hostage by an ability user!”

The sound of urgent footsteps echoed throughout the building, so forceful that even the ceiling above them vibrated. It was the Supervision Office’s internal armed guard unit.

“—I don’t like to kill, especially my own kind.” Rong Qi withdrew his gaze, his voice calm and steady. “So, for those present today, aside from Mr. Bai, I’ll give you two choices.”

Shui Ronghua and Chen Miao were cornered in the corridor, one behind the other. They exchanged a look, their eyes filled with shock and uncertainty.

“First, stand by and watch. I guarantee that no matter what happens next, you won’t be harmed in the slightest. Second, insist on staying, and you will be buried here along with Mr. Bai shortly.”

Rong Qi spread his hands.

His fingers were long and strong, the gesture elegant, showing no trace of bloodlust. “You may begin choosing now.”

Chen Miao found it utterly absurd and couldn’t help stepping forward. “What nonsense are you talking about? You…”

“Stand down,” Bai Sheng interrupted him.

“But Bai-ge—”

“The guards aren’t coming for us, which means Shen Zhuo has already fallen into their hands. Stand down!”

The slightly flippant air that always surrounded Bai Sheng had completely vanished. The profile of his face was dark and sharp, possessing an unquestionable tension.

“…” Chen Miao realized something. His Adam’s apple bobbed. “Bai-ge, be careful,” he said in a low voice. Then, he and Shui Ronghua cautiously backed away, their wary eyes fixed on the wheelchair-bound Rong Qi as they retreated step by step to the far end of the corridor.

Only after they were out of sight did Bai Sheng turn to face Rong Qi, a long black blade appearing silently in his palm.

“Who on earth are you?”

Rong Qi nonchalantly pointed at the bio-lab. “See that?”

—Inside the bio-lab was the wireframe bed moved from the Quanshan County Health Center, sealed as a level-one contaminant. The humanoid scorch mark on it was clearly visible.

“That is me. Or rather, that was me three years ago,” Rong Qi asked. “Any other questions? You can ask them before you die, and I’ll answer them all at once.”

The abandoned ward was terrifyingly quiet. Bai Sheng stared at Rong Qi without moving. After a long moment, the corner of his mouth suddenly curved up, a hint of ferocity in his handsome features in the shadows. “Although I do have many questions, but…”

An afterimage appeared in mid-air. Bai Sheng’s movement was so fast he almost vanished on the spot. When he reappeared, he was in front of the wheelchair.

“But I don’t like to give villains time for monologues.”

Blood splattered with a wet squelch.

Bai Sheng’s blade had pierced through Rong Qi’s chest, the tip even puncturing the back of the wheelchair!

With a splash, blood poured onto the floor, splattering far and wide.

The air froze. Rong Qi lowered his head, his expression hidden in the shadows. After a long while, his shoulders began to tremble slightly.

—He was laughing.

Chen Miao blurted out, “This is bad.”

Rong Qi grabbed the blade with one hand and looked up with a smile. “Is this all you’ve got?”

Bai Sheng’s expression changed in an instant, but it was too late.

In the next second, Rong Qi exerted his strength, throwing him back several steps, man and blade together. Bai Sheng didn’t even have time to react before a searing pain ripped through his chest, and he spat out a mouthful of blood.

An invisible force had pierced through his chest out of thin air!

Thud.

Bai Sheng dropped to one knee, pressing a hand to his chest. The blue veins on the back of his hand bulged amidst the blood.

He gritted his teeth and looked at the wheelchair, only to see the stab wound on Rong Qi’s chest healing rapidly before his eyes. In just a few seconds, it had vanished completely, as if nothing had ever happened.

“—Damage reflection. A type of immortality ability.”

Rong Qi looked down at Bai Sheng from above, a hint of regret in his voice as he pointed to his own throat. “If you had stabbed here just now, I wouldn’t even have to bother killing you a second time.”
·

With a ding, the elevator doors opened. Noda Shunsuke emerged, holding Shen Zhuo hostage. In front of them, countless gun barrels simultaneously aimed at them. “Don’t move!”

“Hands up!”

“Release the hostage!”

Everyone was on high alert; the air stretched to its breaking point. A single spark would detonate the entire scene.

“Tell them to back down,” Noda Shunsuke whispered into Shen Zhuo’s ear from behind him. “You wouldn’t want your subordinates to see me do anything disrespectful to you in public, would you, beauty?”

“…” Shen Zhuo, his head forced back slightly, waved a hand forward.

The armed guard unit of the Shenhai City Supervision Office was a truly high-level, high-firepower elite combat force. The weapons they were equipped with were special bullets designed specifically for ability users, absolutely not the kind of ordinary military hardware available on the market. Under normal circumstances, such a force wouldn’t just be able to handle Noda Shunsuke; even an S-class would have to shed a layer of skin.

But right now, no one dared to make the slightest move. They had no choice but to retreat step by step.

With a knife to his neck, Shen Zhuo was forced to walk forward. Though he was under duress, his voice was light and mocking. “What, are you planning to walk me back to your den on foot and then lure Bai Sheng over to kill him?”

Noda Shunsuke sneered. “There’s no need for that. Mr. Rong said the reason we failed to invite Supervisor Shen back last time was that we weren’t respectful and sincere enough, so he decided to change his approach this time…”

He turned, arriving at the stairwell, which led down to the first basement level.

“—By killing the one who’s most in the way, he can personally welcome you.”
·

“Im-immortality ability?” At the end of the basement corridor, Chen Miao muttered in disbelief.

Resurrection-type evolutionists were indeed difficult to deal with, as they could be revived as long as a sufficient amount of their cells remained. But that was a far cry from being completely immortal, not to mention this incomprehensible damage reflection ability.

How could a person evolve like this? There was simply no way to deal with him!

“I’ve never been able to see through you, Mr. Bai,” Rong Qi said flatly, leaning back in his chair and looking at the profusely bleeding Bai Sheng on the floor.

“There are twenty S-class individuals in the world, and each has their own unique Fatal Strike. You’re the only one who doesn’t. If evolution is a grand game, then you are a player who has reached the endgame by relying solely on basic attacks. You have no ultimate move; you never go for the kill. All the disputes that could have arisen in your past have been resolved by your slick methods and immense wealth.”

Bai Sheng gasped for breath, the corners of his blood-soaked lips curling up. “Thank you. Please call it personal charisma.”

Rong Qi sneered. “Perhaps. But it doesn’t change your fate today.”

He leaned back in his chair, raised his eyes to look at Shui Ronghua in the distance, and suddenly called out in a loud voice, “—Witch Italdo!”

His voice carried an irresistible force. The Witch immediately sensed something was wrong, but it was too late.

The restraint Shen Zhuo had placed on her was easily torn apart. Before the female doctor could even struggle, Witch Italdo broke free and instantly took over the body!

“…” The Witch looked down at her own hands, unable to believe she had been summoned just like that.

“You were not a creature of this world originally. You fell to this earth with a meteorite and were then suppressed in a human body by Shen Zhuo, your powers sealed to their absolute limit…”

Rong Qi raised a hand and snapped his fingers. The metal ring around the Witch’s neck popped open with a click and fell to the floor.

“Go kill Bai Sheng.” Rong Qi’s voice was very gentle, yet it carried an undeniable command. “Dig out Bai Sheng’s heart, and I will set you free, completely restoring your true, original power.”

Witch Italdo’s pupils dilated slightly as her gaze met Bai Sheng’s from across the room.

A moment later, a subtle change came over her eyes, seemingly mixed with a certain excitement and malice. She took a step forward.

“No… don’t,” Chen Miao’s voice nearly broke. “Don’t act rashly! Don’t!”

With a swish, the Witch spread her five fingers, her fingertips as sharp as daggers. “Can you really free me?”

Rong Qi smiled. “I can.”

A smile appeared on the Witch’s blood-red lips. Her pace quickened with growing excitement. No one saw that as she passed by the corridor window, the glass reflected the image of Shui Ronghua. The female doctor’s phantom floated in mid-air, wrapping her arms around the Witch in a soft embrace, then bent down to kiss her terrifyingly ugly right cheek.

“Italdo, you promised me,” the doctor murmured softly in her ear. “You promised you would never betray Shen Zhuo.”

The Witch stopped, looked at Rong Qi, and smiled charmingly. “Then I’ll believe you for now.”

As the last word fell, she leaped through the air towards Bai Sheng. In the distance, Chen Miao cried out, “Stop—”

At the same instant.

A ball of white healing light burst from the Witch’s sharp fingertips. She flung it fiercely at Bai Sheng, who caught it as if he had expected it all along, pressing it directly into his chest. The fountain of blood stopped instantly.

Simultaneously, the Witch reversed course, faster than a shooting star, and clawed at Rong Qi’s face!

The moment was faster than a flash of lightning. But Rong Qi just sighed silently and snapped his fingers.

With a massive boom, the Witch was sent crashing through the wall!

“Don’t move,” Rong Qi raised an index finger, stopping Bai Sheng who had shot to his feet.

“It was Doctor Shui who stopped you from doing anything detrimental to Shen Zhuo, wasn’t it?” As dust billowed from the shattered wall, Rong Qi looked at the Witch, whose body was half-twisted, and shook his head with emotion. “The understanding between you two is deeper than I imagined.”

“You @#$^%^&&, I’ll fck your @#¥%(&#¥…” The Witch erupted in a stream of curses no one could understand, which, judging by the intonation, might have come from her distant homeland. “What kind of character just popped out of nowhere, talking so big?!”

Rong Qi actually let out a small laugh. Just then, the sound of chaotic footsteps came from the stairwell in the distance.

Everyone looked over at once, only to see Noda Shunsuke backing down the stairs step by step, holding someone hostage in front of him with a knife. It was Shen Zhuo!

The scene was terrifyingly absurd.

One was the dignified Supervisor of Shenhai City, the other a globally rare S-class. This combination should have been a crushing force anywhere, yet here one was being held hostage and the other had been stabbed through. It was so unbelievable that no one would dare to believe it if they were told.

“…We meet again.” A barely perceptible sigh tinged the end of Rong Qi’s words. “Supervisor Shen.”

Forced forward by the knife, Shen Zhuo passed by Bai Sheng, his eyes glancing at the horrific wound that pierced through his chest.

Their eyes met. For a moment, Bai Sheng thought that with his usual cutting nature, Shen Zhuo would make some sarcastic remark, like “Can an S-class gentleman really get himself into such a mess?” or “Now you know why you can’t get an official position, don’t you?” But Shen Zhuo said nothing. The next moment, he looked away towards Rong Qi and said coldly:

“I’m sorry, have we met? I don’t recall meeting a cripple of your size.”

“My apologies, my evolution is still missing its final touch, and I was simply too eager to see you.” Surprisingly, Rong Qi didn’t get angry even at this. His deep black eyes looked at Shen Zhuo as he said calmly, “But it doesn’t matter. Soon, you will be able to see me in my final, fully evolved state.”

As he spoke, he waved a hand casually. Noda Shunsuke understood and released Shen Zhuo, giving him a push forward.

Shen Zhuo stumbled half a step but didn’t hesitate to draw the gun from the small of his back and point it at Rong Qi. No one present had expected such a fierce reaction. Chen Miao cried out, “Senior, don’t!”

Bai Sheng shot to his feet. “—Stop! Attacking him will cause a backlash!”

Bang!

As the gunshot rang out, Noda Shunsuke moved like lightning, snapping Shen Zhuo’s wrist with a crack. The bullet grazed Rong Qi’s face and embedded itself in the wall!

Bai Sheng cursed aloud and swung his blade at Noda Shunsuke. The latter hastily drew his katana. Clang—

But the katana was shattered in one blow by the enraged Bai Sheng, the broken blade flying off and collapsing half a wall!

Shen Zhuo clutched his broken right wrist, collapsing downwards in excruciating pain. Rong Qi reached out from his wheelchair and caught him.

“Please don’t make yourself suffer, Supervisor Shen. I only wish to ask for your help, I don’t want to kill you. I can even guarantee your absolute safety by my side… Can we sit down and discuss this properly?”

Rong Qi’s words could even be called gentle, but Shen Zhuo glanced up at him, his sweat-soaked face as pale as ice and snow, his eyes filled with clear mockery. “You don’t want to kill me?”

Rong Qi said, “Yes, I really just want to…”

“No one goes to such great lengths to capture a high-level Supervisor just to kill them. But there are things in this world more terrifying than death.” A strange, cold smile suddenly touched the corner of Shen Zhuo’s mouth. “Do you know what the first thing the ten permanent Supervisors of the United Nations receive upon taking office is?”

Rong Qi narrowed his eyes in confusion.

“A supervisor bears both honor and disgrace, holds classified secrets, and can be killed but not captured. To leave a Supervisor with their final dignity, we are all fitted with a capsule of deadly poison in our teeth upon appointment…”

Rong Qi’s expression changed dramatically in an instant. He reached out to grab Shen Zhuo’s jaw, but Shen Zhuo suddenly jerked his head back, his voice filled with undisguised derision. “I don’t talk to idiots.”

Then, he moved his back molars as if crushing something. Black blood immediately spilled from the corner of his mouth, and he slumped backward.

Chen Miao cried out, “Senior!!”

In that instant, everyone’s mind went blank. Even Noda Shunsuke froze in place, unable to believe his eyes. Rong Qi leaned forward and pressed a hand to Shen Zhuo’s neck—there was no pulse.

Dead?

One of the world’s top ten Supervisors, the last hope of the HRG project, the Sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of a hundred thousand evolutionists—dead just like that?

After a brief, deathly silence, it was as if a spark had fallen into a pot of oil. The entire scene exploded.

Everyone was shouting; everyone was roaring. In the distance, the security team charged forward like madmen. Bai Sheng’s face was terrifyingly grim. He stood up and reached for Shen Zhuo. Noda Shunsuke tried to rush over and block him but was sent flying through a wall by a kick from the utterly enraged Bai Sheng.

Amidst the thunderous crash and chaotic uproar, Rong Qi stared motionlessly at Shen Zhuo. If one looked closely, they would see his pupils had constricted to their absolute limit. He suddenly slit his palm with a finger, leaned forward from his wheelchair, and tried to force his blood, which glowed with the faint blue light of a meteorite, into Shen Zhuo’s mouth.

At that very moment.

Shen Zhuo’s eyes snapped open.

With a sickening tear of flesh, he plunged his hand into Rong Qi’s unguarded chest—cleanly, accurately, and ruthlessly—and ripped out the bloody heart!

Blood sprayed wildly. The air instantly fell silent. Everyone was dumbfounded.

“…” Rong Qi looked down in astonishment at Shen Zhuo, meeting his clear, sharp eyes. Then came a sickening squish!

With a gruesome sound, Shen Zhuo mercilessly crushed the heart into a bloody pulp.

“You didn’t really think I was going to kill myself, did you, idiot,” he panted with a cold laugh.

Thump!

Rong Qi fell back into his wheelchair, blood gushing from his chest cavity. Noda Shunsuke stumbled forward. “Mr. Rong!”

Bai Sheng moved like lightning, forcibly shoving Noda Shunsuke aside and barking at Shen Zhuo, “Get over here!”

With an agility completely different from his usual self, Shen Zhuo scrambled up and, without a word, dashed straight for Bai Sheng. Bai Sheng pulled him behind him in a flash, wiping the black blood from the corner of his lips with his thumb, his voice unsteady. “You… What the hell is going on with you?!”

“Thanatoid paralysis toxin!” Shen Zhuo carelessly smeared the blood away, grabbed Bai Sheng’s arm, and bolted like a shooting star. “Issued by the Supervision General Administration, specifically for supervisors to fake death. Stop asking questions and let’s get out of here!”

“…………” Bai Sheng’s feelings at that moment were simply beyond words. “What happened to a Supervisor choosing death before dishonor?!”

Shen Zhuo looked impatient. “We’re all just here to do a job. How much does Nielsen even pay us? Why are you the only one so into character?”

Bai Sheng: “…”
