MWED Ch37: Unable to Resist Pulling into the Car

The next morning, Yan Xun woke up first.

Although his sleep schedule was irregular, he was used to waking up early because he had to rush to school for early self-study.

When they were in Nancheng, their home was far from the school, and they couldn’t afford a closer school district house. Additionally, Yan Xun had to take care of his family and couldn’t stay on campus, so he had to wake up very early every day.

Over time, he got used to this routine.

But Chu Tingyun was still sound asleep because he was so exhausted from last night that he didn’t even notice when Yan Xun got up to check him, applied the medicine again, and put a bandage on his chest.

Chu Tingyun liked to curl up while sleeping and always needed to hold something. His carefully styled hair was now disheveled, soft and black, with half of his face buried in the pillow, eyelashes resting, giving him a strangely soft and vulnerable look.

Yan Xun quietly watched him for a while, his gaze gradually softening, thinking that even the cunning Chu fox could look this obedient sometimes.

Not watching for long, Yan Xun got up and went out, quietly closing the door behind him.

For breakfast, he made porridge and some small dishes.

During this time, Yan Xun went to the study and took down the examination report hanging on the wall.

Although Chu Tingyun never brought outsiders home, Yan Xun still thought about the possibility.

What if one day he or Chu Tingyun brought friends home to discuss something in the study, and someone saw a report with Yan Xun’s name hanging on the wall?

Or if Chu Tingyun had a video conference and the report accidentally appeared in the frame…

The thought was too frightening.

Yan Xun couldn’t face it, so after days of hesitation, he finally took it down.

He opened the frame, took out the report, and after some thought, decided not to throw it away but rather put it in the drawer of Chu Tingyun’s desk.

The drawer mostly contained company documents, USB drives, office supplies, and so on. Yan Xun didn’t look; he just carefully placed the report at the very bottom.

Then, Yan Xun put a postcard in the empty frame. It was one of the many postcards Chu Tingyun had brought back from his business trip to City A.

Actually, when Chu Tingyun asked Yan Xun if he wanted anything, Yan Xun didn’t want to trouble him and was afraid that refusing might seem too cold, so he chose the simplest gift.

But unexpectedly, the postcards he received were not ordinary ones with just a scenic photo and a short message. They were specially designed, incorporating some traditional techniques. For example, one postcard featured a hollowed-out butterfly, which, when unfolded, formed the outline of the most famous mountain range in City A.

Yan Xun researched online and found that these postcards were not mass-produced by commercial factories but were custom-made by various folk artisans.

At that time, Yan Xun once again felt that his relationship with Chu Tingyun before their divorce must have been very good; otherwise, Chu Tingyun wouldn’t have been so thoughtful.

During the time he was recovering in the hospital, Yan Xun was quite bored.

He spent his time collecting information about his past online, specifically checking his alma mater’s website, the National Student Information Center, and school forums.

He also looked at major news events from recent years to understand the changes in the world and his country.

Besides that, Yan Xun’s remaining form of entertainment was browsing Chu Tingyun’s moments on social media.

Although his social media was visible for only three days, Chu Tingyun updated it almost daily. The content was extremely rich and captivating.

There were photos of City A’s night sky, fireworks, unique local buildings, and special foods.

More serious posts included attending business dinners and working at the office.

There were also many short videos, ranging from wearing formal attire and playing snooker with friends, to wearing sportswear and playing tennis, and playing the piano by the floor-to-ceiling windows late at night.

Overall, Yan Xun thought Chu Tingyun seemed to be an extremely charismatic mature man with a vibrant and diverse real-life, with many interests and hobbies.

But after returning from City A, Chu Tingyun’s posts became less frequent.

In the past few days, there hadn’t been any.

Perhaps he was busy with work… Yan Xun thought.

At this point, gathering his thoughts, Yan Xun carefully put away most of the less suitable postcards and selected the simplest one to put in the frame, which he then hung back on the wall.

At eight o’clock, Yan Xun dragged Chu Tingyun out of bed for breakfast.

As a boss, Chu Tingyun didn’t need to go to the office every day or stick to a fixed schedule; he could simply delegate work to others.

However, recently, the Chen family’s issues had dragged them into many problems. Chu Tingyun, facing immense pressure from the board, insisted on cutting losses and stopping all projects immediately, withdrawing all investments.

Moreover, Gu Shanqing was preparing for the Star Mark listing. As one of the largest shareholders and bosses, Chu Tingyun had to be involved throughout, so he had been extremely busy and had to work every day.

When Yan Xun was annoyed with him and hated him before, Chu Tingyun wasn’t busy. Now that his little husband liked him and gave him smiles every day, he was swamped with work.

This frustrated Chu Tingyun.

Exhausted from lack of sleep, Chu Tingyun was in a bad mood when he was forced to wake up, and he even thought about blowing up the company for a moment.

But then, his little husband came over, kissed his face, and gently coaxed him:

“Don’t lie in bed anymore, be good.”

“……”

The morning grumpiness disappeared instantly, and the company was saved!

Fifteen minutes later, the elegantly dressed Chu Tingyun was seated at the dining table.

Yan Xun noticed that he had even styled his hair specially.

Chu Tingyun had excellent taste, especially in terms of clothing and accessories. Furthermore, he had a lot of hair, which was soft, so it had to be styled to match his CEO demeanor.

So Chu Tingyun was meticulous and refined from head to toe every day.

Yan Xun thought if Chu Tingyun were a girl, she would surely be a beautiful, outstanding, and unique young lady.

While having breakfast, Chu Tingyun was completely unaware that Yan Xun was imagining a female version of himself. He was still thinking about last night.

He vaguely remembered Yan Xun saying he didn’t want money last night.

Nevertheless, Chu Tingyun placed two cards on the table: one was Yan Xun’s previous salary card with about three million in it, and the other was a new card for their living expenses.

“This is your old salary card, with about three million in it. The other one is for our living expenses.”

He no longer called the card an allowance for Yan Xun but rather their joint living expenses.

Chu Tingyun initially told Yan Xun that he managed the money to avoid Yan Xun thinking of anything or running away with the money.

Now that he no longer had that concern, he didn’t need to withhold money.

Chu Tingyun wasn’t always a wealthy young master.

In his youth, when he was with his mother, he lived an ordinary life. His time was filled with rigorous training, and he had nothing to do with the activities and pleasures of wealthy people. Even after joining the company, he had experienced financial struggles in the early days.

Now, with Yan Xun not working and having no money, he seemed a bit anxious. For example, Chu Tingyun noticed that Yan Xun had been diligently preparing and was eager to find a new job these days.

But Chu Tingyun didn’t want him to go to work.

He had seen Yan Xun working hard, and besides, they didn’t have much time together. If they were both busy with work, it would be like being colleagues in different companies.

This time, Chu Tingyun didn’t strongly oppose it but approached the matter indirectly.

“Xunxun, our family doesn’t lack money. The main thing is, you see how busy I am every day. If you also go to work and are busy every day, we won’t have much time together.”

“And your injury has just healed. It’s better to rest at home for a while. Or you can learn something you like, like advancing in your profession, picking up a new sport, or adding another hobby.”

Chu Tingyun didn’t want Yan Xun to suffer for money. The Lin family had dragged him down for over ten years, and now that he was finally free, he wanted Yan Xun to enjoy life.

It would be even better if he could spend freely on Chu Tingyun’s card.

Yan Xun thought for a moment and then slightly agreed.

“Okay, then we won’t rush.”

“Hmm.”

Hearing this answer, Chu Tingyun felt an indescribable satisfaction. Every time he brought up quitting work with Yan Xun before, Yan Xun would explode like a firecracker.

“Chu Tingyun, what do you take me for? A pet kept at home for entertainment? Or just a tool for your desires?!”

“You can’t even earn much money, Yan Xun. Why bother?”

Chu Tingyun really didn’t understand why Yan Xun hated all his good intentions so much, and he was very annoyed.

“I no longer restrict you from going out, and you can spend my money freely. Can’t you just stay at home and have fun? Why are you so ungrateful? If it were someone else, they’d be overjoyed!”

“Then go find someone else!”

Yan Xun sneered.

“Find someone who’s delighted and can’t find their way, someone willing to be locked up at home as a pet? Why marry me if you want that?”

Chu Tingyun could not stand such words because they implied that Yan Xun had had enough of being with him and wanted to push him to someone else immediately.

“Find who? Who do you want me to find?!”

He strode over, grabbed Yan Xun’s wrist tightly, and pulled him towards himself.

“I’m finding you, Yan Xun.”

“Listen clearly, don’t think about pushing me to someone else or escaping from me.”

“Never think about it for the rest of your life!”

“……”

After their argument, Yan Xun hadn’t spoken to him for a whole week.

But the current attitude was a world apart from before. Could this really be the difference between not liking and liking?

Chu Tingyun, feeling somewhat dazed, didn’t notice that Yan Xun had finished eating and had already cleared his dishes.

“I’m leaving now. You clean up after you finish eating and go to work later.”

“Leaving?!”

Chu Tingyun snapped back to attention. He immediately walked over to Yan Xun’s side. In the past, whenever Yan Xun left the house, it was usually to avoid him, which often led to conflicts between them.

Over time, Chu Tingyun had become somewhat reactive whenever Yan Xun mentioned leaving.

But this time, before speaking, Chu Tingyun managed to temper his anxious and fearful feelings and turned his questioning into a casual inquiry:

“Where are you going?”

“I’m going back to my alma mater.”

Yan Xun, not noticing anything unusual about Chu Tingyun, was carefully packing up his computer and backpack.

“I saw on the website that a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering specializing in artificial intelligence is giving a lecture this afternoon. I’m very interested and want to attend.”

“……Oh, a lecture.”

Chu Tingyun silently breathed a sigh of relief and then felt puzzled.

“It’s an afternoon lecture, so why are you leaving so early?”

“Yeah, it’s in the afternoon. But I want to take a stroll around my alma mater in the morning.”

Yan Xun’s memory had stopped at that starlit night in his senior year of high school.

So even though he knew he had successfully entered his ideal university and graduated smoothly, he had no actual memories of it.

Now that there was an opportunity, he wanted to go and take a look.

“I’ll just have a quick meal at the cafeteria for lunch. Since you’re not coming back for lunch, I’m too lazy to cook. Also, I can get to the lecture earlier and get a better seat.”

Clearly, Yan Xun had already planned out everything for today. Chu Tingyun opened his mouth, realizing he had nothing much to say.

After Yan Xun finished packing his backpack, he noticed Chu Tingyun had been standing next to him for a while.

“What’s wrong? Do you need something?”

“……”

Chu Tingyun was sizing up Yan Xun.

Yan Xun had gotten used to wearing the clothes Chu Tingyun had bought for him. However, compared to Chu Tingyun’s refined attire, Yan Xun was dressed simply.

He wore a clean white inner layer, a simple yet stylish American-style sweatshirt, and loose-washed gray jeans.

His youthful energy and slightly cool demeanor made him look effortlessly handsome.

In short, he looked very handsome.

And effortlessly so.

Suddenly, Chu Tingyun reached out and cupped Yan Xun’s face, staring at him for a while. Then he went to the cloakroom and grabbed the simplest black baseball cap to put on him.

Yan Xun wasn’t very used to wearing hats but didn’t take it off. He just looked at Chu Tingyun with a puzzled “Hmm?”

“Wear it.”

Chu Tingyun specifically adjusted the brim of the hat downward, almost covering Yan Xun’s eyebrows.

“Don’t take it off before you come back home.”

“…… Why?”

Yan Xun was somewhat confused.

Chu Tingyun clicked his tongue and said seriously:

“Yan Xun, you need to remember, you’re now a married man.”

“You’re not allowed to attract attention on the university campus.”

“……”

Yan Xun was stunned for two seconds. When he realized the reason Chu Tingyun insisted he wear the hat, he couldn’t help but laugh.

Although he thought Chu Tingyun was a bit overly anxious. If he were in Chu Tingyun’s position, he would simply cover Chu Tingyun’s face and send him to work.

In the end, the obedient little husband still nodded.

“Alright, I won’t take it off before coming home.”

Chu Tingyun then stopped eating, quickly cleared the dishes, and insisted on personally driving Yan Xun to the school.

“You’re not on the way, and it’s rush hour. You might be late.”

To this, Chu Tingyun simply nodded slightly: “I’m the boss.”

So what if he’s late? Can anyone deduct his pay?

Yan Xun didn’t mention it again.

He suddenly thought that working wasn’t as good as being the boss.

When getting into the car, Yan Xun was surprised to find another person in addition to the driver.

“Mr. Yan, good morning.”

Assistant Fang thoughtfully opened the car door for him.

“Good morning.”

Yan Xun replied politely.

Assistant Fang remained silent until Yan Xun got out of the car at his alma mater. As Yan Xun’s figure disappeared into the school gate and the car started moving, Assistant Fang turned and spoke.

“Mr. Chu, the final investigation results of Mr. Yan’s car accident have come out.”

“Hmm.”

Chu Tingyun nodded slightly, indicating for him to continue.

“As reported before, the insurance company and the police’s final investigation results are consistent and there are no issues. We also hired professionals ourselves. The inspection of the damaged vehicle came out this morning, but no signs of tampering were found.”

Chu Tingyun frowned and asked,

“What about the road conditions?”

“The mountain road was built a long time ago, the surface is uneven and sunken, and the guardrails have some quality issues, but those are natural wear and tear.”

Assistant Fang paused slightly.

“The surrounding surveillance cameras are also fine; the entire process of the accident was captured clearly. It was raining that night, and the mountain road conditions weren’t very good.”

“So the final conclusion given to us was that the primary cause of the accident was improper driver control.”

In other words, no one tampered with the vehicle; it was purely Yan Xun’s issue, possibly due to heavy rain causing poor visibility, or fatigue driving at night, etc.

In short, the investigation results from all three parties were consistent.

It was just an accidental car accident.

“Improper control…”

Chu Tingyun closed his eyes.

Mentioning the accident again, his mind inevitably drifted back to that night.

It was the day after Chu Tingyun had just taken the cat for neutering, and he was waiting for Yan Xun to give in because of the cat and obediently return to his side.

However, that night, Chu Tingyun inexplicably felt a sense of unease and couldn’t sleep, tossing and turning in bed. Eventually, he spread out the clothes Yan Xun had worn and drank a lot of alcohol to bury himself in a foggy sleep.

But soon, Chu Tingyun was awakened by the phone ringing. Just as he had barely fallen asleep, being woken up made him furious, almost wanting to grab the caller through the signal and beat them up.

However, after answering the call, the first words from the other side instantly extinguished all Chu Tingyun’s anger, as if he had been abruptly thrown into the Arctic ice sea.

“Hello, this is the Capital First People’s Hospital. Are you Mr. Yan’s family member?”

“He’s just had a car accident, and the situation is very critical…”

Hearing the words “car accident,” Chu Tingyun seemed to lose his hearing for a moment. He lay on the bed covered with Yan Xun’s clothes and took a while to find his voice.

“Okay… okay… I’ll be there soon.”

“Soon…”

Chu Tingyun, who was usually meticulous and dressed up even his hair, ran out in his pajamas and slippers.

His first reaction was to drive to the hospital.

But unfortunately, he had drunk a lot of alcohol that night and couldn’t drive.

Sitting in the car, he suddenly realized this and slapped himself.

Smack—

The sound was sharp and even a bit loud, which made him slightly more awake.

But it was too late to call a driver, so Chu Tingyun could only take a taxi to the hospital.

At that time, it was 4 a.m., and it was raining heavily, making it hard to find a taxi.

Chu Tingyun, who was used to having a driver, was unfamiliar with hailing taxis and didn’t have time to figure out the various taxi apps. He just ran to the street and flagged down any passing cab.

The driver was startled and angry, stopping abruptly and cursing.

But this time, Chu Tingyun didn’t go up and beat him directly. Instead, he trembled and pleaded with the driver.

“My… my partner had a car accident… Please… I beg you to take me to the hospital.”

The driver’s expression quickly shifted from anger to urgency, and he opened the passenger door for the soaked man.

“Quick, get in the car!”

In short, Chu Tingyun eventually reached the hospital as quickly as possible. Shortly after, Assistant Fang, who had been summoned by the boss’s call, also rushed to the hospital.

Rescue personnel, police, and doctors were all present.

Yan Xun was lying in the emergency room.

The rescue personnel who had just returned from the scene began explaining the whole process to Chu Tingyun as a family member.

“The vehicle lost control midway, hit the guardrail, and directly overturned the mountain. Although it was fortunately stopped by a tree, it got embedded in the soil and filled with rainwater, half the car was submerged.”

“Originally, this wasn’t too dangerous, but the driver suffered severe head trauma and fell into a deep coma, which led to suffocation.”

“Fortunately, the car was equipped with a special automatic alarm system that was triggered the moment the accident happened. The positioning was very accurate and wasn’t affected by the heavy rain, which allowed us to find his location and carry out the rescue immediately.”

After explaining the reasons, the doctor who came out of the emergency room also informed Chu Tingyun of the situation:

“The patient is in a critical condition. He has suffered severe head trauma leading to intracranial bleeding, a fracture in his left lower leg, and there’s also fluid accumulation in his lungs…”

Chu Tingyun couldn’t hear what the doctor was saying. He only felt a wave of darkness before his eyes, the world spinning around, and a buzzing in his ears.

The critical condition notice, the surgery consent forms—so many papers filled with black characters were given to Chu Tingyun, who couldn’t even see the content. He only remembered that he couldn’t hold the pen steadily, flipping through the pages frantically, trembling as he signed his name repeatedly.

As he signed, Chu Tingyun’s mind was filled with thoughts of how he should have never left Yan Xun alone in the rental apartment.

If he had stayed with Yan Xun or forcibly brought him back home, even if it meant locking him up… This wouldn’t have happened.

But now, nothing could change the situation.

“Save him… Doctor…”

“Please save him…”

What seemed like a dramatic scene from television was now happening to Chu Tingyun.

He had never imagined he could lose composure like this.

Fortunately, the rescue was timely, and the emergency treatment was effective. That night, Yan Xun was out of immediate danger, though he remained in a coma.

When Yan Xun woke up, he thought he had only been unconscious for ten days, but in reality, he had been in a coma for half a month before being transferred to another hospital.

During that time, Chu Tingyun stayed by his side constantly, never leaving the hospital.

The immediate danger was caused by the water in the car leading to asphyxiation. After the brief critical period, the remaining injuries were less severe and required only time for recovery.

The doctors found it strange because, logically, Yan Xun should have woken up by now, but he remained unconscious.

So, when the condition improved and the injuries stabilized, Chu Tingyun transferred him to another hospital. He moved Yan Xun to two or three well-known hospitals in the capital and hired the best brain specialists.

Chu Tingyun even arranged for a foreign hospital, preparing to send Yan Xun abroad if domestic treatment didn’t work.

But after all the examination methods were used, the experts told Chu Tingyun that, according to the test results, there was no severe brain injury. The location of the intracranial bleeding was safe, and Yan Xun should have woken up by now.

The reason for the continued coma might be a subconscious unwillingness to wake up.

In other words, the main cause of Yan Xun’s coma now could be psychological rather than physical trauma.

The doctors asked Chu Tingyun seriously:

“Has the patient recently encountered something very distressing? Has he had any serious psychological issues before?”

“…”

Chu Tingyun was speechless in response to the doctor’s questions.

In the past three years, Yan Xun had been with him, and it was clear who was responsible for the current situation.

So, Chu Tingyun could only transfer Yan Xun to the best private hospital for gradual recovery, waiting for him to awaken.

Looking at Yan Xun lying in the hospital bed, Chu Tingyun felt as if he had returned to the day his mother passed away.

He thought, if he was the reason why Yan Xun would rather remain unconscious for a lifetime, how much must Yan Xun hate him…

Thus, Chu Tingyun finally decided to let go.

“Wake up, Yan Xun.”

“As long as you wake up, I’ll… I’ll agree to the divorce.”

“I’ll let you go, and I’ll return the cat to you.”

“As long as you’re willing to wake up…”

When he said these words, it felt like he was tearing out his own heart.

Maybe such words were truly effective, or perhaps Yan Xun was about to wake up anyway. In any case, about a week later, the young man on the hospital bed opened his eyes.

At that moment, Chu Tingyun was outside buying lychees for him.

When he received the call, he wished he could run to the hospital immediately, run to Yan Xun’s side.

But then, the doctor told him that Yan Xun had lost his memory.

Lost his memory…

Within five minutes of learning this news, Chu Tingyun came up with a new, shameless, and deceitful plan. He asked the doctors and nurses to tell Yan Xun that he couldn’t find him, and quickly began making arrangements.

He immediately called Assistant Fang, asking him to find someone to simply renovate the rental apartment where Yan Xun had previously lived, focusing on installing the best dishwasher, and quickly move some of his own things in.

Assistant Fang didn’t understand but carried out the task immediately.

After all, the money from Chu Tingyun was in place.

Chu Tingyun had actually considered a better lie, such as going back to see Yan Xun immediately, showing warmth and care, and telling him that they were a loving couple from the beginning to the end.

This would have had the highest chance of success, at least it would have been more believable than the scenario of a college student forcefully pursuing a CEO.

But in the end, Chu Tingyun didn’t do that. Instead, he proposed a divorce. Although he used some small tricks in the reasons for the divorce, at that time, he truly intended to give Yan Xun a choice.

If Yan Xun, even after forgetting everything, still did not want to be with him and agreed to the divorce directly, Chu Tingyun would really let him go and never force any further entanglements.

If not, he would try to make amends and win him back.

Of course, this was clearly an unfair choice, as Chu Tingyun wasn’t exactly a good person.

But the result was good, with the situation taking a turn for the better and everyone (Tingyun) being very pleased!

The only problem was that Chu Tingyun found it very difficult to maintain his composure.

On the way to take Yan Xun back to the hospital, when Chu Tingyun suggested picking him up when he was discharged and was coldly rejected by Yan Xun, Chu Tingyun habitually became angry again.

But he remembered his persona and plan, making an effort to calm down and not argue immediately, struggling to suppress his emotions throughout the trip.

Later, when the inexperienced young husband, concerned that he might vomit, offered to help bring over a trash can, Chu Tingyun was again frustrated that Yan Xun didn’t remember his aversion to trash cans but was also pleased with his concern.

However, he still left without waiting for Yan Xun, instructing the driver to leave.

Because Chu Tingyun feared that if he didn’t leave, he would lose control and run down to embrace the person.

And then drag him into the car and kiss him to death.
