Chapter 45

It’s over; the Shenhai City Supervisor is possessed by a ghost.

Night.

J City.

The basement level of the villa housed a massive swimming pool filled with a ghostly blue fluorescent liquid. The emerald waves rippled, shimmering with a deep, mysterious luster like that of a meteorite.

With a splash, the water surface broke. Rong Qi wiped the water from his face and walked up the steps one by one to the ground level.

The multiple wounds left from the battle with the Wolf of Odin were disappearing rapidly. Over a dozen ruptured internal organs healed, the pierced abdominal cavity and thigh mended, and the huge gash on his back left not a single scar.

The last scar was right in the center of his chest. The penetrating wound left by the Daydream backlash gradually healed under the meteorite’s glow, leaving skin and muscle as whole as before.

Although it would take some time to restore peak condition, this body itself was as good as new.

Rong Qi raised a hand against the light, squinting to examine it carefully.

This current body was cultivated entirely according to his aesthetics—slender bones, defined muscles, strong yet streamlined, possessing excellent adaptability to Super S-class power. It could be said to be perfect in every aspect.

The only regret was that it was very unappealing to Shen Zhuo.

That wasn’t actually surprising. After all, when it came to Shen Zhuo, there were very few things in this world that could please him, while there were many things he disliked. If possible, Rong Qi actually wouldn’t mind switching to a body Shen Zhuo liked a bit more, but that would have to wait until everything settled. Because the genetic resurrection ability of this current body was too precious; it could almost ensure he had no natural enemies on this Earth aside from Causality. Even a top-tier evolutionist as powerful as the Wolf of Odin couldn’t kill him.

If it were the previous body, there would have been absolutely no chance of winning against “Tyrant”; he would have been dead long ago.

To achieve his goal, the genetic resurrection capability possessed by this current body was indispensable.

The terrifying intense light and sky-filling flames seemed to appear before his eyes again. Rong Qi narrowed his eyes slightly, a trace of chill surfacing from the depths of his pupils.

“…Thanks a lot, Su Jiqiao,” he murmured.

“To show my gratitude… when the day comes that I can kill you, I will definitely make your death a quick one.”

He inhaled, picked up a black bathrobe to put on, and strolled out of the spacious hall.

Several high-level evolutionist guards stood solemnly outside the porch. Noda Yoko kept her head down by the door. Seeing him come out with his body completely restored to normal, she breathed a sigh of relief as if a heavy burden had been lifted. “Mr. Rong!”

Rong Qi asked, “Where is your brother?”

Noda Yoko’s eyes were slightly red as she murmured in Japanese, “Brother, he…”

Rong Qi nodded without speaking, walking straight ahead without stopping. At the end of the long corridor, he pushed open a slightly ajar door.

It was a converted hospital room, but where the hospital bed should have been was a transparent cultivation tank. A human body was gradually coalescing from the ghostly blue meteorite solution. Internal organs and skeleton had already formed, blood-red muscle tissue was still growing slowly, and only the head was complete, the facial features clearly recognizable.

It was Noda Shunsuke.

Rong Qi stood by the cultivation tank, extending a hand from above. A drop of blood fell from his fingertip into the meteorite solution.

The terrifyingly powerful genetic ability combined with the meteorite, instantly causing a violent reaction in the solution. The residual body suddenly grew rapidly, the heart in the left chest began to beat fiercely, and immediately after, the head opened its eyes!

“…”

The young A-class evolutionist gasped for breath in pain as if waking from a dream, clutching his chest and spitting out churning bubbles in the meteorite solution. Noda Yoko cried out “Brother” and rushed up, kneeling by the cultivation tank to hug him, trembling as she stroked his tragically twisted head and neck bones.

“You are far from completing resurrection; you shouldn’t have forcibly used spatial abilities.” Rong Qi stood two steps away, looking down at Noda Shunsuke from above. “Using abilities before fully recovering will greatly prolong the time for body resurrection. Perhaps for the next year or half a year, you won’t be able to use spatial tunnels as you wish.”

Noda Shunsuke lowered his head. His not-yet-fully-grown vocal cords sounded hoarse and strange, full of shame. “I’m sorry, Mr. Rong… We really couldn’t stand that Nielsen being so arrogant, so…”

“It doesn’t matter,” Rong Qi answered gently, turning to look out the window.

A sliver of skylight opened in the underground level, revealing the vast night sky outside. Beyond the distant towering mountains, at the end of the sky, was the faraway Shenhai, with traffic flowing like a galaxy on the horizon.

“‘Tyrant’ can neutralize evolution below S-class. Although it cannot completely neutralize Causality, it is very useful to us…”

Rong Qi paused, speaking softly, “We will obtain this ability.”

The next morning, Shenhai City Supervision Office.

The conference room was spacious and quiet. Shen Zhuo placed a thick stack of hospital reports on the table.

Then he leaned back in the armchair, hands resting on the edge of the long table, slender fingers loosely interlaced, gazing at the girl opposite him.

“This is the injury assessment of Zhang Zongxiao and other members of the torture gang. Very fortunately, no deaths have been caused so far. Otherwise, even the Minor Evolutionary Protection Regulations couldn’t keep you in Shenhai.”

Chu Yan wore a sky-blue plaid dress, her short hair neatly framing her snow-white cheeks. She looked very clean and elegant, like a quiet, delicate little blue flower, carefully reaching out to take the stack of injury reports on the table.

But the next moment, Shen Zhuo pressed two fingers on the report, stopping her action. “No, the pictures are too bloody.”

Chu Yan said in a soft voice, “I can handle it.”

“I know you can. I also know you’ll be very excited after seeing them, feeling encouraged in a way you shouldn’t be.”

“…”

Chu Yan’s timid and weak demeanor vanished instantly. She retracted her hand and sat there, looking at the Shenhai City Supervisor across the long table. “How do you want to deal with me?”

“I can’t let you enter HRG,” Shen Zhuo looked at her calmly and said. “You aren’t qualified yet.”

Chu Yan was an extremely clever child and didn’t find this decision hard to accept, asking only, “Why? Is it because my academic ability isn’t enough?”

To her surprise, Shen Zhuo shook his head.

“You are already much better than when Chen Miao first started washing test tubes under me. A considerable portion of senior researchers in HRG don’t have outstanding IQs, while many brilliantly clever students linger for years unable to enter HRG’s door. When scientific exploration is enough to change the destiny of a species, it often doesn’t depend on the researcher’s IQ.”

Shen Zhuo was silent for a moment, then said slowly, “We actually hope HRG researchers aren’t too smart, that they can be a bit stupid.”

“…Stupid to what extent?” Chu Yan asked in a low voice.

“Stupid enough to be willing to enter the project with a suicide note, willing not to take their most precious lives seriously, willing to be crushed to pieces just to carry the truth forward.”

The girl’s eyes widened slightly.

“HRG is a truth burdened by two generations over thirty years with their lives. It’s too heavy.” Shen Zhuo gazed at her. “I know the current you cannot bear that weight. I can’t even be sure if the current Bai Sheng can do it.”

“Although I very much hope to wait for such a day in the future.”

No one spoke in the conference room; only the ventilation made a slight sound.

Chu Yan sat across the long table, her slender hands resting in front of her, looking lost.

Shen Zhuo stood up from the armchair, gathered the stack of injury reports, and tapped them neatly on the table.

“Chu Yan, sixteen years old, B-class evolution. Combining the International Supervision Office’s judgment opinion, sentenced to one year under the Minor Evolutionary Protection Regulations, allowed to serve outside prison.” He suddenly remembered something and looked up to ask, “Do you have a guardian?”

“…” Mentioning this, Chu Yan hesitated for a moment before saying, “Out of town…”

“Then according to Article 10, Paragraph 1 of the Supervisor’s Manual, the supervisor has guardianship obligations for minor evolutionists within the jurisdiction. Your guardianship temporarily belongs to me.” Shen Zhuo said, “The good news is the Supervision Office covers meals from now on. The bad news is serving outside prison requires labor reform. The specific labor content is decided by me; you have to do whatever I tell you to do. Any other questions?”

Chu Yan asked without much hope, “Are you going to send me to school?”

Shen Zhuo scoffed. “Thinking too much. No school in all of Shenhai can teach you, except—”

His voice stopped abruptly.

Chu Yan: “?”

The Shenhai City Supervisor stood frozen in place, expression blank, movement halted, as if someone suddenly pressed the pause button.

After a long time, under Chu Yan’s horrified gaze, he raised his hand, moving as trance-like as if sleepwalking, pressing his temple. “…Except me.”

Chu Yan’s first reaction was to look everywhere for cameras to prove her innocence. “W-What’s wrong with you? I didn’t do anything! Daydream has already been returned!”

Shen Zhuo asked slowly, “Do you know XGYE216 Neuron Stimulant?”

Chu Yan tried her best to stand on tiptoe to ensure her whole body was exposed under the surveillance lens. “Isn’t that the drug used to stimulate the cerebral cortex to resist hallucination abilities, with a 95% probability of causing the side effect of hypothalamic peptide neurohormone secretion disorder within 72 hours after use?”

“Mmh,” Shen Zhuo said slowly. “I once thought I was the 5%.”

Chu Yan squatted on the chair under the surveillance camera like a cat with exploded fur, face full of nervousness calling Shui Ronghua, while watching helplessly as the Shenhai City Supervisor turned, pushed the door, walked out of the conference room, and disappeared expressionlessly into the elevator lobby outside.

The last image before the elevator doors closed was him gasping suddenly. In that instant, Chu Yan felt she must be blind, because that was clearly a sob.

Ten seconds later, with a ding, the elevator stopped at the top floor, and the doors opened slowly.

Shen Zhuo practically rushed out of the elevator, striding straight for the office. Just then, Chen Miao came forward with documents. “Senior, look at the fiscal deficit in the next quarter’s budget…” Before he finished speaking, he was blown by the hurricane of Shen Zhuo passing by, scattering reports all over the sky with a whoosh. “S-Senior?!”

Shen Zhuo rushed into the office and slammed the door shut without looking back.

But it was still too late.

Because the next second, Yang Xiaodao turned the corner of the corridor, pushed the door open with a whoosh, holding a report card for the beginning-of-term exam expressionlessly. “Supervisor Shen, the teacher asked my parent to sign. I can’t find Bai Sheng anywhere—”

Yang Xiaodao’s voice vanished.

Shen Zhuo stood straight there, staring at the report card full of miserable red marks in front of him. His face showed no emotion, only his eye rims slowly turning red bit by bit.

His figure was lean, face snow-white, long eyelashes moist, lips tightly pursed, like a child who had suffered a grievance but wouldn’t say it.

Then, under Yang Xiaodao’s horrified gaze, his eyelashes fluttered. Plop.

A crystal-clear tear fell on the column for “Chemistry, 18 points.”

“………………”

Yang Xiaodao clung to the door behind him like a little wolf dog with exploded fur. “Help! Ghost! Possessed by a ghost ahhh—”

A large bouquet of red roses was placed with a rustle in front of the tombstone. The couple on the white marble tombstone seemed to reflect a bit of joy, smiling at their beloved son before the grave.

Bai Sheng squatted in front of the tombstone, legs spread wide, elbows resting on his knees, looking levelly at his parents on the photo who would never age again.

Others might light a cigarette when mourning alone; Bai Sheng would dangle a lollipop in his mouth. If one didn’t look closely, they would think this handsome guy was also deeply sentimental, melancholy, and silent—ignoring the premise that while others brought white chrysanthemums costing two hundred a bunch, he sent two thousand worth of Ecuadorian red roses.

“Dad, Mom, coming to see you suddenly today is because I want to tell you I’ve fallen for someone.” Bai Sheng mumbled with the strawberry Alpenliebe in his mouth, “He has a particularly sharp tongue, loves mocking people, engages in academic discrimination relying on his high IQ, has bad eating habits, is very stingy about reimbursing my travel expenses, and is a man who can’t have children. But it doesn’t matter, I’m also a man who can’t have children, so we’re even.”

Sunlight sprinkled on the grass through the treetops, and crisp bird chirping came in the breeze.

Bai Sheng smiled, murmuring, “I like him so much.”

The couple in the black-and-white photo smiled vividly, just as they did when alive, always full of encouragement, supporting their child with all their might no matter which path he chose.

Bai Sheng reached out to gently touch the engraved words on the tombstone, his eyes gentle and full of attachment.

“If one day I sleep forever underground, I hope the tombstone will read: Here lies a good man named Bai Sheng. Together with his partner Shen Zhuo, hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder, they walked the same path for a lifetime.”

“Bless me,” he whispered. “Even if there are raging waves ahead, I am still willing to be the shield before him, forever able to bear the weight on his shoulders.”

Bai Sheng stood up, stepped back two paces from the tombstone, crunched the lollipop, and pulled out a thin chain from under his shirt. The pendant was two wedding rings strung together.

“Next time. I’ll definitely bring him to see you next time!” He tossed the thin chain up and caught it, laughing loudly. “You’ll like him too!”

On the tombstone, his parents smiled back, the rings shining brightly in the sun.

Bai Sheng turned around and walked back along the bluestone path. Suddenly, the phone in his pocket vibrated wildly. Caller ID: Shui Ronghua.

“?”

Did Shen Zhuo miss me and is too embarrassed to say?

Bai Sheng picked up the phone happily. “Hello, has the Lord Supervisor got new instructions after only half an afternoon? Is dinner arranged for everyone at the Shenhai Supervision Office? Tonight, Michelin three-star sushi…”

“Comrade Bai Sheng,” Shui Ronghua stood outside the Supervisor’s office, speaking gravely to the phone, “Please take responsibility like a man.”

Bai Sheng: “?!”

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass, Shen Zhuo sat in the large armchair, side profile clean as snow, eyelids thin and flushed red, eyelashes moist and long like crow wings. Refusing to speak, saying not a word, like an autistic, beautiful figurine.

The report card at his feet was already wet with tears; the tragic Chemistry 18, Physics 29, Math 43 blurred together. In addition, a quarterly budget report was spread open in front of him. The 360 million fiscal deficit didn’t look shocking because it had already been soaked by tears into a hazy lump.

Chen Miao and Yang Xiaodao squatted on the ground together, each holding high a horsewhip taken from the interrogation room wall, repenting heartbreakingly with heads bowed. “We spent money too lavishly!” “Math is really, really hard!” “Next quarter we’ll all ride shared bikes for business trips!” “How about you just hang me up and beat me!”

“Two full bottles of high-concentration XGYE216 Neuron Stimulant. Currently hitting Type III symptoms: autistic, fragile, insecure personality.” Shui Ronghua looked expressionlessly at the one-and-a-half-meter-long side effect instruction sheet in her hand. “Specific manifestations include weakness, sensitivity, refusal to speak, resistance to strangers, easy dehydration due to uncontrolled tear glands, requiring strong sense of security and close monitoring around the clock. Symptoms can last up to 48 hours.”

After a full minute of silence, Bai Sheng’s shocked-to-blank answer came from the other side of the phone:

“Huh?”

“Surveillance shows Supervisor Shen’s last action in the elevator was taking out his phone to call you. Although it didn’t connect, we have reason to believe he considered asking you to take responsibility.” Shui Ronghua threw away the drug instruction sheet with a swish, speaking powerfully, “In short, the drug was taken to save you. Come back immediately right now and quickly take the Supervisor home before the General Bureau finds out!”

Bai Sheng was nearly knocked dizzy. After a long while, he incredulously spat out a word:

“—Huh?”

Under the clear blue sky and white clouds, on the verdant grass of the cemetery, Bai Sheng hung up the phone, suddenly waking as if from a dream, and swept out like a hurricane.

Shortly after, that awesome sparkling LaFerrari roared to life at the foot of the mountain, merging into the traffic flow like a sharp arrow, speeding toward the bustling Shenhai city center in the distance. The silver supercar reflected an arrogant arc of light under the sun.

  1. Ron Qi trying to change his body in order to appeal Shen zhuo XD
Shen Zhuo crying his eyes out even the red report card faded BAHAHAHHAHA

  2. Dangggg, Rong and his people are too powerful. Rong can actually heal that person to that extent :0 !!!! His comment on physical appearance tho 🤭😅 quite the pursuer, willing to change his looks to cater to mc…
Now we know what they’re looking for for joining the HRG OwO so that’s why Xiao Chen fits fitsss…
They now have 2 kids, welcome to the fam, Xiao Chu 🤭
Poor mc, Xiao Yang’s grades are just that brutal 😭 Anyways, it’s fun that the effects of the drugs are included to be read uwu reading mc like that is (੭ु ›ω‹ )੭ु(✪▽✪)

  3. Reading this chapter i have some theory about Rong (by now i believe most ppl may have the same thoughts) , long back it been hinted that he maybe an alien 👽(almost conform now) and we know that he had some affection to children and that he had once accompany someone and he said they are grown up and afew chapter back we also learned that there something (ghost/alien)was hunting our MC when he was a child and the old man ask him if he remembered about that + his mom tryingto kill him most have somethingto do with it.. I’m almost sure now that Rong is that same thing from back then🤔 and i think he hate Su Jiqiao because he almost killed our MC !

  4. What kagome swan said above, and wasn’t there something weird going on with the mirror when SZ was a child? Rong Qi watched him when he was small, but he was non-corporeal then. So Rong Qi is only possessing a body, somewhat like Witch Italdo, except that she is sharing Shui Ronghua’s body with the latter’s consent (rather enthusiastic consent, too, it seems 🤭)

Everyone is obsessed with the MC 😂

(Also a drug that causes autism… I guess we’ll never get rid of that particular myth 🙄)
