Chapter 24
“Shen Zhuo, you can’t do this to me…”
Thump, thump, thump.
Shen Zhuo’s leather shoes echoed steadily as they hit each concrete step.
Outside the building, car after car screeched to a halt. A team of supervisors filed in, all heavily armed, following behind him with solemn expressions.
Hostile whispers from evolutionists drifted from all directions: “The chief Supervisor of Shenhai City…” “What is he here for, to round us up?” “Doesn’t look like it…”
Shen Zhuo paid no mind to his surroundings.
Although it was his first time here, he seemed to know the internal layout of this unfinished building like the back of his hand. He didn’t need anyone to lead the way, heading straight up the stairs to the top floor and pushing the door open.
Chen Miao had tears streaming down his face like wide noodles. “Supervisor!”
Bai Sheng wore a look of touched surprise. “Supervisor!”
“On what grounds did you destroy a vehicle from my country’s embassy, Supervisor Shen Zhuo?!” Kingston gritted his teeth, his hackles raised. “As the Supervisor of New York State, I lodge a solemn protest and strong condemnation against this act! I will report this to the International Supervision General Administration—”
Shen Zhuo stopped in his tracks, looking down at the little foreign devil.
“The year I taught at Pritchett, you failed my class because you were too high on drugs. Shouldn’t you be calling me Professor Shen now that we meet again?”
The surroundings instantly fell silent.
Everyone’s mouth formed a shocked “O.”
“…Pro-fes-sor, Shen.” Kingston practically squeezed the words out of his throat. If he had a tail, every hair on it would have been puffed up into a ball. “Do I need to remind you that now you and I are both supervisors? I have the right to invite Mr. Bai, who is a free man, to join the New York Supervision Office—”
Shen Zhuo pointed at Kingston and said succinctly:
“Arrest him.”
The wolf-like supervisors didn’t need a second command. They immediately pounced and pinned down the two white bodyguards. Poor Kingston almost died of anger on the spot. “Shen Zhuo, on what grounds are you arresting me?! This is an abuse of power! I’m going to report you to the International Supervision General Administration! I’m going to—”
Shen Zhuo didn’t stop. He walked past the eagerly approaching Bai Sheng and went straight to the terrified, retreating Kingston. He grabbed the boy’s small, thin neck in a flash and slammed him against the windowsill with a bang.
In full view of everyone, the wall cracked with a roar, and Kingston’s two legs dangled in the air, flailing desperately. “Let me go! Let me go!!”
Bai Sheng, who hadn’t even been glanced at, was left speechless.
“I am one of the ten permanent Supervisors of the United Nations. I have veto power over any evolutionist-related matters globally, including the appointment and dismissal of ordinary jurisdictional supervisors like you.”
Shen Zhuo leaned in slightly, his beautifully shaped lips close to Kingston’s ear, and said softly, word by word, “If you lay a hand on my people again, I will strip you naked and hang you in Times Square, just like when you were high on drugs, burst into my office, stripped naked, and tried to seduce me, and I personally hung you outside the window of the teaching building.”
Kingston: “…………”
“Su-Supervisor Shen, no, Professor Shen!” The older bodyguard almost went crazy on the spot, hastily begging for mercy. “Our superior knows he was wrong! Please, have mercy! We’ll leave Shen—”
Before he could finish, Shen Zhuo yanked Kingston’s neck with force, dragging his entire body out of the windowsill and suspending him in mid-air.
Amidst the bodyguard’s frantic, “We’ll get out of Shenhai right now!” and Kingston’s furious, “Shen Zhuo, you can’t do this to me!” screams, Shen Zhuo cleanly let go.
“Ahhhhhh—”
Kingston plummeted straight down. Three seconds later, from downstairs came:
BOOM!!
Shen Zhuo patted the cuffs of his suit, his expression cold as he turned around.
The entire room was silent as a cicada in winter.
“…He’s not… not dead, right?” Chen Miao looked out the window weakly. “He’s not dead, right? At this height, he won’t necessarily die, right…”
Shen Zhuo said, “Just a broken leg. Call 120 for him.”
Everyone was instantly relieved. The two white bodyguards almost burst into tears. Chen Miao quickly organized first aid and called 120 for an ambulance.
Shen Zhuo buttoned his suit jacket with one hand, walked through the crowd of people who dared not make a sound, and went straight down the concrete stairs. Luo Zhen was waiting respectfully by the special car at the entrance of the construction site. Just as he was about to open the car door for him, a hand reached out from behind Shen Zhuo and pressed firmly against the car door, brooking no argument.
“Sir,” Bai Sheng asked, trying to suppress a laugh, “you came all this way and are leaving without even a greeting?”
“You followed me down anyway, even without a greeting,” Shen Zhuo said calmly.
Luo Zhen bowed slightly and quickly slipped away without a sound.
This was their first meeting in seven days. Ever since that night at the hospital, Shen Zhuo had been busy with the aftermath of the Quanshan County Health Center attack and hadn’t paid any attention to this S-class corner of the wall coveted by all the major Supervision Offices around the world.
But this corner of the wall was someone who knew how to seize opportunities to showcase his advantages. In the short time he had spent baiting the fish, he had already tidied himself up quite nicely. His lean muscle lines were hidden under his shirt, and his appearance was handsome and fresh, almost like a young college student.
“I didn’t expect you to have been a teacher…” Bai Sheng said with great interest after sizing up Shen Zhuo with a smile for a long moment.
Shen Zhuo said, “I went there to do research and also to select talent for HRG. What’s wrong with that?”
Bai Sheng grunted noncommittally, his eyes roaming up and down Shen Zhuo for a moment, as if to make up for the week he hadn’t seen him. His meaningful gaze lingered on those thin, elegant lips.
Though nothing was done, the warm, entangled breath from that late night behind the hospital room door seemed to brush against his face again, as if even the corner of his lips could feel the electric bite of that moment.
Shen Zhuo, his back against the car door, leaned back an imperceptible inch.
Bai Sheng’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He moved closer and said softly, “You really had the heart to ignore me for a whole week.”
“…”
Shen Zhuo raised his hand and pressed two fingers against Bai Sheng’s chest, pushing him back a few inches. But his wrist was immediately grabbed.
“Luckily, that Kingston kid came knocking, otherwise I would have gone to the gate of the Shenhai City Supervision Office to beat the drum and cry out my grievances.” Bai Sheng could almost completely trap Shen Zhuo, his lips close to his thin ear, and he asked with a smile, “Are you really planning to get me for free and not acknowledge it?”
Shen Zhuo’s throat moved slightly. He maintained his backward-tilted posture. “I came for you today, not for Kingston.”
“Huh?”
Bai Sheng was stunned by this direct hit. Then he saw Shen Zhuo open the car door behind him with a reverse grip and take a half-step to the side.
A familiar figure then emerged from the car. The left side of her face was enchanting and captivating, while the right side was like a skull. It was Witch Italdo
“I’m taking her to the Central District for some business. We’re leaving this afternoon.” Shen Zhuo straightened his collar nonchalantly and said, “I came to get you to go with us.”
Bai Sheng was about to blurt out “Sure, sure,” but he swallowed the words back down with a quick thought. He stood there, arms crossed, and snorted with a laugh. “I’m just an unofficial, unpaid civilian volunteer. I don’t even have a place to get reimbursed for my travel expenses. Why should I go?”
Shen Zhuo gestured to Witch Italdo, meaning, “Go ahead.”
Bai Sheng said, “?”
Witch Italdo held up a phone, pressed the play button for a recording, and Bai Sheng heard his own voice come from it:
“If I didn’t think a daily salary of 2.08 million was too little, I would have already thrown myself into the entertainment industry. I’d have at least won an Oscar for the motherland… Beautiful, it’s just the two of us here. Leak me some background info on my love rival, and I’ll buy you a Chanel later. Deal?”
The Witch opened Baidu Baike, typed in “Chanel,” and showed him the phone, pointing to the large double-C logo on the screen. She asked curiously, “Is this what you were talking about?”
CRACK!
A lightning bolt of memory struck from the sky. The wealthy second-generation heir had an epiphany, suddenly remembering this massive debt that transcended cosmic races.
“To spend so much blood on some outdated gossip from the trash can, you probably don’t care much for the salary of an official position either.” A corner of Shen Zhuo’s lips curled up. He opened the car door and gestured. “Get in. Bring your bank card.”
Bai Sheng: “…………”
